What Is Metallic ABL Web?

Metallic ABL Web is a multilayer Aluminum Barrier Laminate designed for squeeze tube conversion. The aluminum foil layer provides high barrier performance, while the metallic appearance can be incorporated directly into premium packaging artwork.

Barrier

Aluminum Foil Core

Aluminum foil provides strong protection against light, oxygen and moisture through the laminate tube wall.

Appearance

Metallic Effect

The metallic substrate can become part of the visual design for premium, technical or luxury packaging.

Tube Format

Lightweight Laminate

ABL combines aluminum barrier technology with the handling and decoration possibilities of laminate squeeze tubes.

Customization

Printed Metallic Web

Custom graphics can be combined with visible metallic areas, opaque inks and decorative finishes.

Metallic Effect Meets Aluminum Barrier Performance

Metallic ABL allows packaging engineers and designers to combine functional barrier requirements with a premium metallic visual identity.

Functional + Decorative

The Metallic Substrate Can Become Part of Your Packaging Design

Unlike a conventional opaque white laminate, metallic ABL can allow selected substrate areas to remain visually exposed. These metallic zones can be combined with printed colors, typography, logos and other decorative elements.

For colors that should appear more opaque or closer to the intended artwork value, a white underprint may be used beneath selected printed areas.

Metallic ABL Barrier Properties

The aluminum foil layer is the primary barrier component. It is particularly useful for packaging projects where protection from light, oxygen and moisture is important.

Aluminum Barrier

High-Barrier Laminate for Sensitive Formulations

Metallic ABL can be evaluated for formulas that require a stronger barrier than conventional single- or multi-layer PE packaging. Final suitability should always be confirmed with the actual formulation and finished package.

Light Barrier Excellent opacity helps protect light-sensitive formulas.
Oxygen Barrier Aluminum foil provides very high gas-barrier performance.
Moisture Barrier Helps reduce moisture transmission through the laminate body.
Aroma Protection Barrier structure can help reduce transmission through the tube wall.

Typical Metallic ABL Web Structure

Metallic ABL is constructed from multiple polymer, bonding and barrier layers rather than from a single sheet of aluminum.

Metallic ABL Thickness Options

Total laminate thickness affects stiffness, squeeze feel, body recovery and conversion. A thicker laminate is not automatically a better laminate for every application.

Total ThicknessFoil OptionsGeneral Selection Consideration
220 μmAccording to structureLightweight laminate configuration
250 μmAccording to structureFlexible tube-body configuration
275 μmAccording to structureBalanced flexibility and tube feel
310 μm12 / 20 μm where applicableMedium-body laminate configuration
350 μm12 / 20 μm where applicableHigher stiffness and substantial body feel
360 μmAccording to structureHigher-body laminate configuration
390 μmAccording to structureHeavy laminate configuration
Important: 220–390 μm refers to the complete laminate thickness. The aluminum foil itself is separately specified, such as 12 μm or 20 μm.

12 μm vs 20 μm Aluminum Foil

Both foil options can be incorporated into selected Metallic ABL structures. The correct specification depends on the complete laminate and finished tube requirements.

12 μm Foil

12 μm Aluminum Foil

A common aluminum foil option for selected high-barrier ABL laminate constructions.

  • Excellent opacity
  • Strong gas barrier
  • Strong moisture barrier
  • Efficient laminate construction
20 μm Foil

20 μm Aluminum Foil

A heavier foil configuration available for selected structures where the technical specification calls for increased foil thickness.

  • Higher aluminum foil thickness
  • Excellent opacity
  • High-barrier laminate structure
  • Selected by project requirement
Do not select 20 μm foil solely because it is thicker. The complete laminate, tube dimensions, side seam, squeeze characteristics and filled-package performance should be considered together.

Printing Options for Metallic ABL Web

Metallic ABL supports multiple printing and decoration technologies for branded cosmetic and squeeze tube packaging.

Custom Printed Metallic Laminate

Artwork can combine exposed metallic areas with opaque colors, text, branding and additional decorative effects.

Gravure Printing

Suitable for detailed, high-volume printed laminate web.

Flexographic Printing

Available according to laminate and artwork requirements.

Offset Printing

Available for selected finished laminate tube applications.

Letterpress

Can be considered according to design and production requirements.

Silk Screen

Useful for strong spot colors, logos and decorative details.

Hot Stamping

Adds additional decorative metallic accents where required.

How to Design Artwork for Metallic ABL

A metallic substrate interacts with printed inks differently from white laminate. Artwork should clearly define which areas remain metallic and which areas require opaque printing.

01

Exposed Metallic Areas

Leave selected substrate areas visible to create metallic highlights directly from the web.

02

White Underprint

White ink can be used beneath selected colors when greater opacity is required.

03

Transparent Inks

Selected ink treatments can allow metallic characteristics to influence the final visual effect.

04

Physical Proofing

Approve printed physical samples because metallic substrates can alter perceived color.

Metallic ABL vs MPET Laminate

A metallic appearance does not automatically mean the laminate uses the same barrier technology. Metallic ABL and MPET are structurally different materials.

Do not use Metallic ABL and MPET interchangeably. Both can have a metallic appearance, but Aluminum Barrier Laminate uses aluminum foil, while MPET uses metallized PET.

Xinfly Packaging Engineering

Barrier, Tube Structure and Artwork Must Work Together

Metallic ABL is both an engineering material and a visual packaging material. Formula compatibility, foil structure, side-seam performance, squeeze behavior and printed appearance should all be validated.

Ask an Engineer
1. Do not select ABL from appearance alone.

First confirm that an aluminum barrier is appropriate for the formula and packaging requirements.

2. Separate foil thickness from total thickness.

A 350 μm laminate is not 350 μm of aluminum. Foil thickness is separately specified.

3. Consider ink behavior on metallic material.

Metallic backgrounds can influence the visual appearance of printed colors.

4. Check the longitudinal side seam.

Barrier and appearance should be validated after web conversion into the finished tube.

5. Evaluate squeeze marks.

ABL can retain deformation differently from plastic barrier laminate structures.

6. Run filled-package testing.

Use the actual formula, closure, printing and sealing conditions before mass production.
