How to Read Laminate Web Specifications

Laminate web is commonly identified by a material abbreviation followed by numerical grade information. This helps buyers and converters distinguish different laminate and barrier constructions.

Example Laminate Web Codes

The examples below show how common laminate specifications may be communicated. Always confirm the exact construction against the technical data sheet.

ABL 250/12

ABL = Aluminum Barrier Laminate

250 = laminate grade / nominal total thickness reference

12 = aluminum barrier specification for this grade

PBL 300/25

PBL = Plastic Barrier Laminate

300 = laminate grade / nominal total thickness reference

25 = EVOH barrier specification associated with the grade

AML 350/9

AML = Aluminum Metalized Laminate

350 = laminate grade / nominal total thickness reference

9 = barrier-layer specification associated with the structure

Important: The slash value is related to the barrier-layer specification of the laminate grade, but the complete meaning should always be verified against the approved TDS because different laminate families can use different constructions.

ABL vs PBL Laminate Web

The best laminate is not simply the material with the highest barrier. Selection should balance formula protection, squeeze behavior, appearance, processing and commercial requirements.

Laminate Web Applications

Laminate web can be engineered for a wide range of squeeze tube applications, from high-barrier oral care packaging to premium skincare and sunscreen tubes.

Oral Care

Toothpaste Tubes

ABL and selected PBL structures can be developed for toothpaste and oral care packaging.

Skincare

Cosmetic Tubes

PBL, EVOH and ABL options for creams, cleansers, treatments and facial skincare.

Sun Care

Sunscreen Tubes

Barrier structures can be selected according to sunscreen formula, active system and stability requirements.

Personal Care

Body & Hair Care

Laminate web can also be used for hand cream, body care, hair care and other squeeze packaging.

How to Choose the Right Laminate Web

Start with the formula and finished package requirements, then select the barrier technology, laminate grade, appearance and conversion specification.

1

Review the Formula

Identify oxygen sensitivity, light sensitivity, aroma components, oils, solvents and active ingredients.

2

Define Barrier Needs

Determine whether the project requires aluminum foil, EVOH or another laminate structure.

3

Select Laminate Grade

Choose the appropriate ABL, PBL, AML or PML specification.

4

Choose Appearance

Confirm white, transparent or silver according to branding requirements.

5

Confirm Tube Dimensions

Define capacity, diameter, tube length and required web width.

6

Validate Filled Samples

Test the actual formula in the selected laminate structure before commercial production.

Xinfly Packaging Engineering

Material Selection Should Start With the Formula

ABL is not automatically better than PBL, and the highest barrier structure is not necessary for every product. The correct laminate should be selected from the complete formula, stability requirements, tube size and user experience.

Ask an Engineer
1. Do not select by product name alone.

Two face creams or sunscreens can have very different barrier and compatibility requirements.

2. Use ABL where stronger barrier is justified.

Aluminum foil can provide excellent oxygen and light protection for suitable high-barrier applications.

3. Consider PBL for squeeze recovery.

Plastic laminate can provide a more resilient tube body and attractive retail appearance.

4. Evaluate EVOH according to the formula.

EVOH can enhance oxygen barrier performance without introducing an aluminum foil layer.

5. Do not ignore conversion requirements.

Laminate grade, thickness, width and seam performance must work with the tube-making process.

6. Test the complete filled package.

Compatibility, leakage, storage stability, closure and filling performance should be validated.

Laminate Web FAQ

Common B2B sourcing questions about ABL, PBL, EVOH and metalized laminate web for squeeze tube manufacturing.

What is laminate web for tubes?
Laminate web is a multilayer sheet material converted into the body of a laminate squeeze tube. It can include PE, bonding layers, aluminum foil, EVOH or metalized layers depending on the required structure.
What are the main types of laminate web?
Common options include Aluminum Barrier Laminate (ABL), Plastic Barrier Laminate (PBL) and metalized laminate structures such as AML and PML.
What is ABL Web?
ABL stands for Aluminum Barrier Laminate. It incorporates aluminum foil into the laminate structure to provide excellent oxygen and light barrier properties.
What is PBL Web?
PBL stands for Plastic Barrier Laminate. It uses a plastic-based multilayer structure and can incorporate EVOH to enhance oxygen barrier performance.
